Sotheby’s says that the Martian rock is actually a meteorite. It is believed that the meteorite was knocked off the surface of Mars by a large asteroid. It later traveled 140 million miles to land on Earth (in the Sahara Desert). In November 2023, a meteorite collector found the stone in Niger.
This large red, brown and gray rock is about 70 percent larger than the second largest rock found on Mars on Earth. It contains about 7 percent of the material that has been found on Earth from Mars.
Of the more than 77,000 meteorites officially found on Earth so far, 400 are from Mars, according to Sotheby’s.
